With a signature style that effortlessly bends genres, DSO is a group that brings a unique and versatile sound to Atlantic Canada’s music scene. Seamlessly blending hard-hitting anthems with emotionally charged tracks, they create a musical journey that resonates deeply with their audience. Composed of Harmz, Ryan Vincent, Romaine and Acalus, DSO has been creating music together since 2019. The four have individual influences and skills they bring to the table, which is embodied in their musical output and the various genres they have covered.
DSO originally formed in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, where the four members were all attending high school together and all had a shared interest in hip-hop music. Acalus and Ryan Vincent had been working on music together for a couple years and wanted to try their hand at creating a rap collective with other friends who shared a similar passion. After a year of making tracks with all four members present, the group released their first single “Safe” and a full-length EP “DSO 001” a week after. Both projects were met with strikingly positive reactions and there became a general narrative for them to pursue the music seriously.
Embarking on an exhilarating musical journey, DSO has graced various stages and events, leaving a lasting mark with their electrifying performances. From captivating the crowd during the Halifax Busker Festival to setting the stage ablaze at Dalhousie’s Student Orientation Week, their live shows are a testament to their prowess. With each stage they conquer, DSO further cements their position as a rap group that not only breaks the mold but also elevates the very essence of live musical experiences.
Highlights of the group’s discography include “Wings”, their most pristine cut to date with classic production and anthemic lyrics, “The Cheque”, a trap-drill hybrid track with attitude and flavour, and “Mama”, an old-school tribute to the influence mothers have had in their lives. Their musical output is diverse yet consistent in its charm and finesse, with each member bringing out the best versions of themselves on these songs.
After some logistical issues, there was a desire to still put out material but keep the feeling of a collective like the way DSO has felt. This was the foundation of PRZM, their music collective dedicated to promoting local artists including themselves. PRZM has risen as a pivotal force in the region's vibrant arts scene by fostering collaboration and cultivating positivity. Along with their musical output, the collective provides artists with a platform to discuss their work through their recent podcast, "Behind the Sound,” and much more in the works.
Although DSO’s journey has been a revolutionary one, there have been remnants of their origins that have stayed the course as the group all matured together. They plan to re-emerge onto the scene as a relentless force of artistry that cannot be refuted, and things may look a bit different from when they first started. Change is inevitable, but the change for DSO will be less sorrowful and will bring the squad into a brand new light. Incredible material will grace you soon enough.
